The Influence of the Dragon Boat Festival on Korea

The Korean people believe that the Dragon Boat Festival is a celebration, a time to sacrifice the sky. Koreans call 'Dragon Boat Festival' 'Shangri', which means "The day of God."

 

In the Korean peninsula during the period of agricultural society, the traditional sacrificial activities participated by the people to pray for a good harvest. When the festival is held, activities such as masquerade, Korean wrestling, swinging, and taekwondo competitions with local characteristics of North Korea are performed. On this day, South Korea will worship the mountain gods, wash their heads with iris water, eat wheel cakes, swing on the swings, wear traditional Korean clothes, but do not row dragon boats or eat dumplings.
